When you are told that you do not know how to do the job of an effective salesperson, in your first performance review with your first employer, it can be a critical moment in your development journey. It set me on the path to truly understand what it takes for individuals to perform at work and what it takes to strive for success in business knowing that the world is continuously changing. I have spent more than 30 years exploring and influencing performance from many angles; from building strategy to driving execution, defining roles and responsibilities, and understanding and doing what it takes to ensure effective performance management. I have done this using the tools of yesterday and the tools of today at the same times as preparing for the tools that will be required in the future. My chosen role is helping organisations navigate these dynamics to continually improve performance in a measurable way. Many companies have a Commercial Excellence department (or team) and each one is slightly different. A typical Commercial Excellence team today has responsibility for Sales Force Excellence (SFE), Marketing Excellence, Digital Strategy, Training/Learning & Development/Capabilities, and Analytics. The primary purpose of the Commercial Excellence professional is to ensure there is consistency across departments that are observable and measurable by all, there are actions and activities that are aligned to the key strategies. The goal is to ensure that efficiencies are gained and to increase the intrinsic value of the organisation. (A value that measures an organization’s ability to overcome negative market forces and leverage positive market forces.)I work closely with clients to define a variety of solutions that come together to meet their specific strategic objectives. I have performed this role for several clients in the medical devices and health and wellbeing sectors, helping them to make their strategies live through their people in a way that is visible to all including the shareholders and customers.
